IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Neighbours,
I am writing this letter to express my concerns regarding late night loud music and I would like to explain the situation.
Firstly, the loud music is the main reason why I am writing this letter to you. Additionally, the timing of the playing music is also concerning. As per city rules, no one is allowed to play music after 10 pm on weekdays.
I have exams nearby and I need to study late nights. However, because of the late night music I am unable to concentrate on my studies. Additionally, my sleep also gets affected due to which I feel dizziness during my preparation.
I would appreciate it if you could avoid late night music and follow the guidelines regulated by the officials. Moreover, you could use the party hall in community centre to do the late night parties.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Sukh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a reasonable request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of your upcoming exams or the specific impact on your health to add more depth to your arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While the progression is logical, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'Additionally'. Improving the variety of your linking words would help the flow feel more natural and sophisticated, which is a key requirement for higher bands.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'express my concerns', 'unable to concentrate', and 'time and consideration' are appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'timing of the playing music' (should be 'timing of the music') and 'feel dizziness' (should be 'feel dizzy'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to describe the situation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is always clear. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'exams nearby' (should be 'upcoming exams') and 'do the late night parties' (should be 'host late-night parties'). Additionally, 'regulated by the officials' is slightly unnatural in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider variety of complex sentence forms to achieve a higher score.
