IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Neighbours,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to talk about a small problem that has been affecting me recently. I understand that you have recently moved into the house next door, and I would like to welcome you to the neighbourhood.

The problem is that you often play music quite loudly late at night. The noise is especially noticeable after 10 p.m., and sometimes it continues until midnight or later.

I have my examinations coming up soon, so I need to study in the evening and get enough sleep. However, because of the loud music, I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies and fall asleep at night. As a result, I feel tired during the day and cannot study properly.

I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume after 10 p.m. and avoid playing loud music late at night. I hope you understand my situation and can help me with this.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to getting along well with you.

Yours sincerely,

sp

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music late at night), describe the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a polite, actionable request for the neighbours to lower the volume after 10 p.m. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a balance between being firm about the issue and remaining friendly. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction sets the context, the middle paragraphs detail the problem and its consequences, and the final paragraph provides the solution. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'As a result,' and 'The problem is that,' which help the reader follow your argument easily. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your message, contributing to a professional and coherent structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is natural and appropriate for the context of a formal or semi-formal letter. You use precise phrases such as 'noticeable,' 'concentrate on my studies,' and 'appreciate it if you could.' While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or nuanced expressions to describe the disruption, such as 'persistent noise' or 'disrupting my academic preparation.' Nevertheless, the current range is sufficient and error-free.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is highly accurate throughout the letter. You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('I would really appreciate it if you could...') and subordinate clauses ('Because of the loud music, I find it difficult...'). Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no noticeable errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. The writing is fluent and error-free, which demonstrates a high level of control over English grammar.
