IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Marc,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Anmol and I am your neighbour next door. I am writing this letter because of the negative affect caused by your loud music

Usually I don't really mind a loud music during a daytime because I have to attend my classes .However, I really want you to turn down the volume of your music after 6'o clock in the evening as I have to study for my upcoming exams.

Morevoer, due to the high base and volume of the music, I am not able to sleep on time which has made impossible for me to focus on my classes .Since, I have exams next week, It is really crucial for me to focus on my studies along with have a proper sleep time.

It would be really helpful if you lower down the music or wear headphones so that I can prepare for my exams without facing any disruptions

Looking forward to hear from you.

Your's truely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and the desired action (turning down the volume or using headphones). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour. To improve, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more balanced; for instance, the explanation of why the music is a problem could be expanded with more specific detail about your exam preparation. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Morevoer' (spelling error), and 'Since'. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'it') is always precise to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'disruptions', 'crucial', and 'upcoming exams'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'negative affect' (should be 'effect'), 'high base' (should be 'high bass'), and 'have a proper sleep time' (should be 'get proper sleep'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and checking the spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., '6'o clock'), missing articles ('a loud music'), and minor errors in verb forms ('along with have a proper sleep'). The sign-off 'Your's truely' also contains spelling and punctuation errors. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and standard punctuation rules for formal letters, and proofread specifically for small errors like missing articles or incorrect apostrophe usage.
