- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Neighbours,
I hope you find peaceful environment here. I am writing to express a concern regarding the extra noise disturbance at late night.
To begin with, owing to shared wall in row-house even if any high pitch volume can impact detrimentally in my house. However, especially after evening time your children has been playing loud speakers for their enjoyment. Apart from this, the pet you have also started barking during dark time. This creates unsuitable environment.
The major issue is that when I prepare myself for upcoming exam in my college at the same time I find myself distraction through extraordinary noise has been created by your children and a dog. Moreover, when I try to sleep also gives me difficulties many time due to this music is being played by your family.
It would be much appreciated if you make voice lower at night either you can entertain before evening when everyone from my family has been found outside the home.
I hope you understand my problem and you are happy to coordinate with it.
Yours faithfully,
Binay.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem (noise from music and pets), describing the impact on your studies and sleep, and requesting specific action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is slightly hindered by grammatical inaccuracies, which occasionally make the specific details of the situation harder to follow. For instance, the explanation of the 'row-house' wall and the timing of the noise could be more clearly articulated to ensure the reader fully understands the urgency of your request. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Apart from this', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow is sometimes interrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the transition 'However, especially after evening time' is slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is used, but the internal cohesion within the second paragraph is weak due to grammatical errors that obscure the relationship between the noise and your daily routine. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would help the text progress more smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'detrimentally', 'extraordinary noise', and 'coordinate'. However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors, such as 'high pitch volume' instead of 'high volume' or 'loud music', and 'during dark time' instead of 'at night'. Some phrases are slightly repetitive or imprecise, such as 'make voice lower' instead of 'lower the volume'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they limit the precision and naturalness of your writing, keeping it within the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('your children has been playing', 'the pet you have also started'), article usage ('in row-house'), and awkward verb tenses ('is being played by your family'). Some sentences are structurally confusing, such as 'I find myself distraction through extraordinary noise'. While these errors are noticeable and occasionally require the reader to re-read for clarity, they do not completely impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct tense consistency.
