IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbor,

I am writing to bring an issue to your attention, I frequently notice a loud music being played in the night on almost every day.

Almost every night, after 8 pm, things in my bedroom start to vibrate with a high-pitched sound of songs and dancing people.

I work longer shifts and when I come home, I expect to get time to relax in peace. It has been getting annoying since the condition is stagnant.

I work in the mornings, and in the evenings, I get little time to study as I am preparing for an entrance exam for my PhD. course in the University of Toronto. The preparation required focused learning which often get hampered by the high-volume music and shouting.

It would be nice if you limited the music on only weekends that would give me the week to focus on my studies and hopefully clearing my exam.

I am open to discussing the resolution of the situation and looking forward to your suggestions.

Kind regards,

Nishant Shrivastava

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your life (sleep deprivation and difficulty studying for your PhD), and proposed a specific action (limiting music to weekends). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the impact is slightly more detailed; for example, you could elaborate on how the lack of sleep specifically affects your daily productivity. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the introduction of the problem to the impact and finally the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited. Phrases like 'Almost every night' and 'It would be nice' are functional but basic. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases (e.g., 'Consequently,' 'Furthermore,' 'In light of this') to connect your sentences more fluidly. The referencing is generally clear, and the letter flows well from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'bring an issue to your attention' and 'stagnant' are used correctly, though 'stagnant' is perhaps slightly unnatural in this specific context—'persistent' or 'ongoing' would be more precise. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to your studies and the noise issue. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that sound more natural in a formal complaint, such as 'disrupting my concentration' or 'a reasonable compromise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are some grammatical slips that affect the accuracy of your writing. For instance, 'a loud music' is incorrect (music is uncountable), and 'often get hampered' should be 'often gets hampered' to agree with the singular subject 'preparation'. Additionally, there is a comma splice in the first sentence ('...attention, I frequently...'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
