- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well and congratulations for moving to the new flat. I am staying just next door, in the same apartment.
Although you seems to be good neighbours but I request you to please lower down the music volume after 10 pm in the night, as this is mentioned in the building policies as well. Moreover, I am pursuing my master degree in communications and my examinations are going to start from 21 August, but the noise disturbing my preparations for study. I worked as Restaurant Manager in the day, which only leave me the night schedule for study. However, the levels of music was too loud from few days won't allow me to focus on studies and disturbing my sleep pattern too.
I hope you will understand my concern and take some intial steps to stop the noise from your apartment. If you try to keep the volume in the minimum range helps me to concentrate more to clear the examinations on one go.
I will look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem (loud music), the impact (disturbed study and sleep), and the requested action (lowering the volume). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although the opening 'Dear Sir or Madam' is overly formal for a neighbourly context. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be slightly more refined. You have covered all requirements of the prompt effectively, ensuring the reader understands the situation and your expectations clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor mechanical issues, such as the transition between the explanation of your job and the impact of the noise. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'pursuing my master degree' and 'disturbing my sleep pattern'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'intial steps' (spelling) and 'in the minimum range' (collocation). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and ensuring correct spelling would improve your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text, such as 'you seems to be' (subject-verb agreement), 'the levels of music was' (subject-verb agreement), and 'which only leave me' (tense/agreement). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'congratulations for moving' instead of 'on moving'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
