IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr./Mrs. Sharma,

As your neighbor from unit 305, I would like to give you a warm welcome to our building. I hope we will meet soon. However, today, I am writing you for a specific purpose which is about the loud music and sounds from your apartment specially after 10pm.

Having living in this building for more than 2 years now, i have never encountered with such an issue before. Loud noises of TV and music from your apartment like party music, and laughing and dancing sounds during the no noise time had abrupted my concentration from last couple of days.

Since, I am preparing for my all India NEET exam which is going to be conducted in upcoming month, it became highly challenging for me to study now due to the noise disturbance. What's more, I am a full time worker in a construction unit, therefore I usually, am working 9-5 shift everyday which left me with no time to study during the day.

Given the circumstances, I really appreciate if you could either arrange you parties before 10 pm or could close the doors and windows of the house properly to reduce noise pentrration .

I hope you look into the matter.

Yours sincerely,

Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the problem (loud music after 10 pm), explain the impact on your studies and work-life balance, and propose specific solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have maintained a consistent and polite tone throughout, which is essential for this type of correspondence. No parts of the task were omitted, and the content is entirely relevant to the situation described.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Since', and 'Given the circumstances' to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to reach the highest band. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem, the explanation, and the proposed solution, making the structure very clear and easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'encountered with such an issue' and 'given the circumstances' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'abrupted my concentration' (should be 'disrupted') and 'no noise time' (should be 'quiet hours'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'wide and flexible' in a sophisticated sense. Expanding your repertoire of collocations would help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if you could either arrange... or could close'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Having living' (should be 'Having lived'), 'i have' (should be capitalized 'I'), and 'it became highly challenging' (should be 'it has become'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout. Despite these, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on consistent verb tense usage and subject-verb agreement.
