Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr/Mrs Neighbour,
I hope this letter finds you a good health. welcome to the neighbourhood. I am writing this letter from next door related to a problem faced by me because of high volume of music played at late night at your house.
As I am a student, living next to your house, in these days I already facing tough time because I have my final examinations in upcoming days so I supposed to concentrate on my finals but due to louder music from your place, not able to preparations for those.
Moreover, the midnight noise really disturbs my sleep, leaving me exhausted during the day without a proper rest.
Additionally, I would like to request you to please turn the volume off or play it softly, especially in the night time so that I can have sound sleep as well as prepare for my exams.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: it identifies the problem (loud music), explains the impact (difficulty studying and lack of sleep), and requests a specific action (turning the volume down). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the music is causing difficulties could be more detailed to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' requirement of higher bands. Nevertheless, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left in no doubt about the situation or the desired outcome.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear opening, body paragraphs addressing the specific requirements, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Additionally' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'I am writing this letter from next door' and 'in these days I already facing'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally appropriate for the context of a formal complaint, though it remains quite simple and repetitive in places.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'I hope this letter finds you a good health' (missing 'in'), 'I already facing' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'I supposed to concentrate' (missing 'am'). These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. While the meaning is always clear, the control over verb tenses and sentence construction needs improvement to reach the level where the majority of sentences are error-free.
