IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear neighbor,
I hope you enjoy your new place. I am writing this letter to welcome you and request you for a small favor, which is late-night music. During night time music volume is too loud. It disturbs my sleep and study.
Currently, I am preparing for my CA final level examination, which will be held on next week. i was doing very hard work to clear this exam. it's very important for me. At night there is quite so its best time to prepare after working the whole day, whereas you are playing music late at night, which distracts me from focusing on my studies. I can barely concentrate on my studies.
I request that if it is possible can you play music at a slower volume after 10 pm. or else you can use your headphones. This would give me enough time to prepare for the examination.
Thank you very much for understanding.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and proposing a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly developed, providing enough context regarding your upcoming CA final examination to justify your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening is slightly more natural; for instance, instead of 'request you for a small favor, which is late-night music', you could state 'request a small favour regarding the late-night music'. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the problem, the specific impact, and finally the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures and lack a variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. For example, the transition between the impact of the music and the request could be improved with better signposting. Improving the flow between sentences would elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant phrases such as 'preparing for my examination' and 'concentrate on my studies'. However, the range is somewhat limited and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'quite' instead of 'quiet' and 'doing very hard work' instead of 'working very hard'. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning without any impediment to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'held on next week' (should be 'held next week'), 'i was doing' (capitalization error), and 'there is quite' (spelling error). Additionally, some sentence fragments or awkward phrasing, like 'or else you can use your headphones', slightly detract from the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while reducing these minor errors will help you reach a higher band.
