IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear MR. Singh,
Welcome to our friendly neighborhood. I hope everything is going well. I am writing to discuss an issue caused by the late night music played at your house.
Currently, I am a final-year neuro-science student, and my examinations are at the end of this month. Since, it includes really tough subjects such as neurochemistry and neuroanatomy, it requires strong concentration and focus to understand. However, loud music coming from your house affects my focus significantly. It is making it hard for me to be prepared for exams.
I would really appreciate if you could take appropriate actions to stop your children playing music loudly at night. I understand they have nigh only time to enjoy after a busy day at school, therefore I would like to recommend you to buy some video games for them. These video games helps in cognitive development along with fun.
I hope you understand and take some steps to improve the situation.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identify the problem (late-night music), explain the impact on your studies (difficulty concentrating on neuro-science exams), and propose a specific solution (suggesting video games). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistently polite; while your suggestion about video games is creative, it could be perceived as slightly intrusive in a real-world context, though it remains relevant to the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Currently' are used to link ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your train of thought. To improve, you could vary your linking words slightly more to avoid repetitive structures, but overall, the organization is clear and coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including subject-specific terms like 'neurochemistry' and 'neuroanatomy'. You use some less common items such as 'cognitive development' and 'significantly'. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'nigh only time' (likely meant 'night-time' or 'only time at night') and 'recommend you to buy', which is slightly unnatural. However, these errors do not impede communication. Expanding your range of collocations would help elevate your score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Since, it includes' (the comma after 'Since' is unnecessary) and 'These video games helps' (subject-verb agreement error: 'games help'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not interfere with the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and punctuation rules regarding introductory clauses. The majority of your sentences are clear and functional.
