IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing this today to describe the dissatisfaction I am facing for few days since you moved in.

The reason is persistent and loud music which is quite triggering for me day by day. It happened when you moved in two days ago. The constant beats and strings have left me with sleepless nights, which have affected my schedule terribly.

As my final year examination is approaching this week, it is critically essential for me to get myself concentrated while studying, practicing, and even resting. The music noises from your flat especially midnight do not seem to be stopping in any way, have been impacting my studies, and focus.

As far as what you can do for me is concerned, I would request you to please stop playing music after 9:30PM and also there is need of keeping the music volume to lowest mode. I hope you will understand.

Yours sincerely,

Navjeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the problem (loud music), explained the impact on your studies and sleep, and provided a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of your situation regarding your upcoming examinations. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are fully consistent with the formal tone, as the current opening is slightly repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The reason is' and 'As far as... is concerned', which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') would improve the overall progression and help the text feel more cohesive rather than a series of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message effectively. Phrases like 'persistent and loud music' and 'critically essential' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'describe the dissatisfaction I am facing for few days' (should be 'a few days') and 'music noises' (which is slightly unnatural; 'noise from the music' or simply 'the music' would be better). The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but more precise collocations would elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'it is critically essential for me to get myself concentrated' is slightly awkward; 'to concentrate' would be more natural. Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'especially midnight' (should be 'especially at midnight') and 'there is need of keeping' (should be 'there is a need to keep'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of basic grammatical structures.
