IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

My name is Adam and I am your next door neighbour. First of all, I would like to welcome you to the neighbourhood. I hope you have settled in your new accommodation. I understand, that after moving to a new house, it is quite common to throw housewarming parties.

The problem is, that I have upcoming examinations and I have to study in the evening. I work in the daytime, so I do not have any other time to study. I also need to get a good night's sleep, so I can function properly the next day. The music that you play in the night, is quite loud and it is audible prominently in my house. That really causes disturbance during my studies and hinders my sleep too.

I insist that you reduce the volume of the music after 10 pm, so I can study peacefully. I hope that we can resolve this matter mutually, so harmony is maintained in the neighbourhood.

Best regards,

Adam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly explained the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provided a specific request for action (reducing volume after 10 pm). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour—polite yet firm. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'The problem is', and 'I also need to'. The transition between the welcome and the complaint is smooth. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the greeting, the explanation of the issue, and the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and naturally. Phrases like 'settled in', 'function properly', and 'resolve this matter mutually' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There is a minor collocation issue with 'audible prominently' (it would be more natural to say 'clearly audible' or 'prominent'), but this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is precise enough to express your needs effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your writing demonstrates a good control of sentence structure. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively. There are a few minor punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas after 'understand' and 'problem is', which slightly disrupt the flow. However, these are minor slips and do not affect the clarity of your message. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your use of verb tenses is consistent and accurate throughout the letter.
