IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Harsh,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my concern in regards to the loud music played at night.
Congratulations on your new home, and I welcome you in our beautiful neighbourhood. As a new home owner, you have hosted some amazing inauguration parties in last couple of weeks which had loud music. Ideally, I ignore the sounds and tried to deal within myself.
To begin with, It has definitely troubled my entire routine throughout the day. I have been preparing for medical final examination, has hindered my concentration. Also, it had deprived me of sleep, which plummet my scores in mock test.
Therefore, I would like you to take some precautions while organizing any event at your place. If you have any occasion that needs to be celebrated, maintain decorum in the community.
furthermore, I would appreciate the steps taken by you to accommodate my request.
Yours faithfully,
Neelu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points: the problem is identified, the impact on studies and sleep is explained, and a request for action is made. However, the tone is inconsistent. You start with a friendly greeting but then use 'Yours faithfully', which is typically reserved for formal letters to strangers where the recipient's name is unknown. Since you addressed the neighbour by name ('Dear Harsh'), 'Yours sincerely' would have been more appropriate. Additionally, the request for action is slightly vague; specifying a time limit for the music would have made the request more effective and better developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the opening pleasantries and the complaint could be smoother. The use of referencing is mostly accurate, though the flow between sentences in the second paragraph is slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inauguration parties', 'decorum', and 'accommodate'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'deal within myself' (should be 'deal with it myself') and 'plummet my scores' (should be 'caused my scores to plummet'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, the errors in word choice occasionally draw attention. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'has hindered my concentration' lacks a subject, and 'it had deprived me' should be present perfect ('has deprived') to match the context of ongoing studies. There are also issues with article usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'in last couple of weeks' (needs 'the') and 'tried to deal' (should be 'have tried'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
