IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I hope you have been doing well lately. I am writing this letter today to express my concern regarding loud music at night.

As far as problem is concerned, I know you recently moved to new place, and love to enjoy every moment. Nevertheless, the late-night music disturbs our life as it makes harder to concentrate on work as well as rest.

In addition, I have my final exams this week that not only require concentration on my study but as a better sleep so that I can focus more on my study next day. Due to high volume music, neither I can sleep at night on time nor utilize my time for studies.

Given the circumstances, it would be appreciated if you could either play music with low volume or turn it off after 10 Pm so that everyone in our neighborhood can rest properly. I hope you will understand the situation and cooperate in this matter.

Yours Faithfully,

Raj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a specific request for action (lowering volume or turning it off after 10 PM). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific nature of your exams or the impact on your daily routine to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'In addition', and 'Given the circumstances' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more distinct. The flow of information is generally smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument. To improve, ensure that your referencing is always precise; for example, ensure that pronouns clearly point back to the intended nouns to avoid any ambiguity in your sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'express my concern', 'Given the circumstances', and 'cooperate in this matter'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'makes harder' (should be 'makes it harder') and 'on time' (which is slightly redundant here). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations will help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'As far as problem is concerned' (missing 'the'), 'neither I can sleep' (incorrect word order; should be 'I can neither sleep'), and 'as a better sleep' (incorrect prepositional phrase). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the placement of correlative conjunctions like 'neither/nor'. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
