IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbor,

I am welcoming you to the neighbourhood, and I also wanted to bring your attention to the late-night music problem.

I can understand that you have just recently moved into a new place and are enjoying settling in. But the late-night music you played at 11 pm caused me a lot of disturbance in my studies. I am a university student preparing for my final exams.

I just wanted to make a request, if you use headphones for late-night music, or do not play music on speakers after 10 pm, as the noise comes straight into my room and distracts my mind from studying. This small change can help me focus better on my exams and

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: it identifies the problem, explains the impact on your studies, and suggests a solution. However, the letter is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of your ideas. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, but the abrupt ending suggests the task was not completed as intended. To improve, you should expand on the impact of the noise and provide a more formal closing to ensure the letter feels complete and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear opening, body, and a brief attempt at a closing. Paragraphing is used, though the structure is quite sparse due to the limited word count. Cohesive devices are minimal; for example, you use 'but' and 'if' to connect ideas, but the flow is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that your sentences are linked more fluidly and that you use a wider variety of transition words to guide the reader through your request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and conveys your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'bring your attention to' and 'distracts my mind' are functional and appropriate. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is little evidence of less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or descriptive language to express your frustration and your request more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The grammar is generally accurate, and your meaning is never in doubt. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I can understand that you have just recently moved...' and 'This small change can help me...'. There are no major errors that impede communication. To improve, aim for more complex sentence structures and ensure consistent control over verb tenses, particularly when discussing future requests or ongoing habits.
