New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Hii Sir/Madam
I am your neighbour next door , my name is Ranjna , so basically the reason why im writing this letter is to remind you that you are living in a society where other people also exist and have their own personal life .
Basically , i am a student preparing for my final exam but recently i have been facing difficulty with loud music you play which does not allow me to concentrate on my studies , couldn’t sleep at night in loud music and which further also disturb my mental peace.
I would request you to please lower the volume and keep it to yourself so that nobody hears it nearby or if this continues i have to complain to the society head which im sure would not be in your favour
Or if you would like to talk to me on this matter please don’t hesitate to contact me on this number [redacted phone]
Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the problem is identified, the impact on your studies is explained, and a clear request for action is made. However, the tone is problematic. The opening paragraph is confrontational and aggressive ('remind you that you are living in a society where other people also exist'), which is inappropriate for a formal or semi-formal letter to a neighbour. While the task requirements are met, the lack of appropriate register and the threatening tone ('if this continues i have to complain') detract from the effectiveness of the communication.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, moving from the introduction to the problem and finally the proposed solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat mechanical. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is essentially one block of text. To improve, you should use more varied linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition') and ensure each distinct point is separated into clear paragraphs to improve readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the sophistication expected at higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'facing difficulty' and 'loud music'. There are also some unnatural collocations, such as 'disturb my mental peace' and 'not be in your favour'. While the meaning is clear, the range is limited, and the tone is often too informal or blunt for a letter of complaint. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise, polite, and formal expressions would significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors throughout the text. You frequently omit articles (e.g., 'in loud music' should be 'with the loud music') and struggle with sentence structure, particularly in the second paragraph where the sentence becomes a run-on. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and incorrect capitalization. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often marred by errors. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
