IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Aunt,

I hope you are doing well. Recently, you have moved along with your family in the nearby location of my home. I am facing the obstacle regarding huge noise created by your late night party music. In the last semester, I got bad scores in one of my difficult subject, chemistry which is quite challenging for me still now. If I will not get desirable marks in that subject, it will significantly affect my overall mark sheet along with other subjects.

I request you to curb my problem by playing music on weekends with a slow noise. Consequently, I will then get proper sleep after being prepared well for my exams. I hope you will give me a valuable reward after hearing my situation.

See you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Jass

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: identifying the noise problem, explaining the impact on studies, and requesting action. However, the task is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The tone is also inappropriate for the task; the prompt asks you to write to a 'new neighbour,' but you addressed the letter to 'Aunt,' which suggests a misunderstanding of the context. Furthermore, the request for a 'reward' is illogical in this context. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and maintain a formal or semi-formal tone appropriate for a neighbourly dispute.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is divided into short paragraphs, which helps with readability. However, the logical flow is somewhat disjointed. The transition 'Consequently' is used incorrectly, as the following clause does not logically follow from the previous one. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally mechanical. To improve, focus on using linking words that accurately reflect the relationship between your ideas, such as 'therefore' or 'as a result' to show cause and effect, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and sometimes misused. Phrases like 'obstacle regarding huge noise' and 'curb my problem' are unnatural and do not fit the context of a formal complaint. The word 'reward' is also used incorrectly, as you are asking for a change in behavior, not a gift. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the limited range of vocabulary prevent a higher score. You should focus on learning collocations related to noise complaints, such as 'excessive noise' or 'disturbing the peace'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are several grammatical errors that affect the flow of the text. For example, 'you have moved along with your family in the nearby location' is awkward, and 'in one of my difficult subject' contains a pluralization error. The sentence 'If I will not get desirable marks' is a conditional error; it should be 'If I do not get'. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often inaccurate. Focus on mastering basic sentence structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
