- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter in concern with the issue regarding noise. Since you recently moved to next door of my house. I found loud music sound at the night everyday which makes me uncomfortable.
As I have my final year examination next week and due to loud music I do not concentrate on my studies well. In the morning I am going for work so I have only some hours in night to study. It also affecting my sleep routine due to which I feel tired all the day at my office which is also does not good for my health.
I request you to avoid playing loud music at night and its better not to play music after 10 pm. I understand that you also have some enjoyment at your home at night. But I am very much appreciated if you find some solution.
Thank you for your understanding and corporation.
Yours faithfully,
Amanpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: identifying the noise issue, explaining the impact on studies and sleep, and requesting a specific solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the noise is problematic could be more detailed to fully convey the urgency of the upcoming examinations. While the purpose is clear, the letter lacks a formal structure expected in a semi-formal context, such as a more appropriate opening and closing salutation given the context of writing to a new neighbour.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'As I have' and 'It also affecting' are used to link ideas, but the flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. The transition between the problem description and the requested action could be smoother. While the overall message is easy to follow, the lack of varied linking words and occasional awkward phrasing prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student uses basic terms such as 'loud music sound' and 'some hours'. There are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in concern with' (should be 'concerning') and 'corporation' (should be 'cooperation'). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the errors in word formation and collocation occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'Since you recently moved to next door' (missing 'the'), 'which is also does not good' (incorrect verb structure), and 'I am very much appreciated' (incorrect passive voice usage). These errors are persistent and sometimes impede the flow of reading, although they do not completely obscure the meaning. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
