IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this regarding the loud noises coming out of your house late at night. I wanted to let you know that i have been dealing with my studies and the music has been a distraction for me. As it shifts my attention span. Currently, I am preparing for a government exam and it is quite arduous. I do not want to sabotage all my hard work and time.

In addition, I am a patient of ADHD and whenever something plays at the back while I study, I loose all my focus. I am really tenacious when i comes to my studies.

I would appreciate if you can turn the volume low if that is possible and fits with you. Moreover, If you can agree with me i would be very grateful. However, if these things keep going on i have to talk to the society manager as it highly affects me.

Your sincerely.

Mk

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points: identifying the problem (loud music), explaining the impact (distraction from exams and ADHD), and requesting action (lowering the volume). However, the tone is inconsistent. While the opening is formal, the closing threat to contact the 'society manager' is somewhat abrupt and aggressive for a first-time request to a new neighbour. The ideas are relevant, but the development is slightly limited by the brevity of the explanation regarding the ADHD condition and the specific impact on study. To reach a higher band, ensure the tone remains consistently polite and persuasive throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'However'. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used with minor grammatical errors, such as 'If you can agree with me i would be very grateful', which does not clearly link to the previous request. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the personal explanation and the request for action could be smoother to improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'arduous', 'sabotage', and 'tenacious'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I am a patient of ADHD' is less natural than 'I have ADHD', and 'whenever something plays at the back' is imprecise. Additionally, there are minor errors such as 'loose' instead of 'lose' and 'i comes' instead of 'it comes'. These errors do not impede communication but prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., 'As it shifts my attention span' is a sentence fragment), capitalization errors ('i' instead of 'I'), and subject-verb agreement issues. While the meaning is clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors like capitalization and ensuring that dependent clauses are correctly attached to main clauses rather than standing alone as separate sentences.
