Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Karan. I am a tenant of brookfield apartment. I am living in unit 58B on 3rd floor. I am writing to you because you are the leader of our management. I am suffering from a serious issue.
Recently, new neighbours shift into the flat next to me. Most of the nights they are playing music loudly, which is affecting my day to day studies as well as sleep cycle. I request them few times to show basic neighbour courtesy.
Unfortunately, there are not understading the problem. Moreover, we have a rule that we could not play music loudly after 11:00 PM without management permission. Most of the times they played loud music till 2:00 PM till late night.
I would therefore appreciate it if you take an action against this issue. Let me know if you need any further details.
Best Regards,
Karan Mahida.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a management figure. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, you mention that you have requested the neighbours to stop, but you do not explain how they reacted or why the situation persists beyond a general statement. To improve, try to provide slightly more detail about the specific impact on your upcoming exams to better justify the urgency of your request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor errors in referencing and sentence structure, such as the confusing time reference '2:00 PM till late night'. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but the transition between the problem description and the request for action could be smoother to create a more cohesive narrative.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'management', 'courtesy', and 'permission'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'shift into' should be 'moved into', and 'take an action' is better expressed as 'take action'. Additionally, 'leader of our management' is slightly unnatural; 'property manager' would be more precise. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score as they show a lack of flexibility in using more sophisticated or idiomatic language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'there are not understading' (should be 'they are not understanding') and 'Most of the times they played' (should be 'Most of the time they play'). The tense usage is inconsistent, switching between present and past in ways that do not always reflect the timeline of events. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your core message. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
