IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I just wanted to ask you politely not to play music very loud at late night because I feel difficult to study.
Actually, I have my examination going on for my Bachelor's and this is my last term. Because of that, this examination holds a great importance in my life, but the late night music explicitly affects my ability to focus on my studies.
Moreover, the music is too loud that makes me distracted easily and difficult to read and understand the text. I already feel so hard to concentrate because of my busy schedule, and the music eventually, worsens it.
Furthermore, I would like to request you to please lower down the volume, so it could not hinder others' personal space. I would really appreciate your understanding and the doings regarding the issue.
Thank you for listening to the issue.
Yours lovingly neighbour,
Radhika.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the problem is identified, the impact on studies is explained, and a request for action is made. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although it leans towards being slightly informal. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the requirements of the task effectively. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the reader is left in no doubt about the situation and the desired outcome. The response is well-structured and fulfills the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Actually' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing could be more natural to improve the flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing for clear communication. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'doings regarding the issue' and 'feel difficult to study' (instead of 'find it difficult'). The phrase 'Yours lovingly neighbour' is also an inappropriate sign-off for a formal or semi-formal request to a new neighbour. While the range is adequate to convey the message, it lacks the precision and natural collocation expected at higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I feel difficult to study' (should be 'I find it difficult to study') and 'the music is too loud that makes me distracted' (should be 'the music is so loud that it distracts me'). Additionally, 'at late night' is incorrect; it should be 'late at night'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
