New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear, Mr. Joy

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing to express my concern regarding noise, which is coming form your house and it disturbed me a lot.

Firstly, my name is Ronny and I am your neighbour. Nowadays I'm study in third year in "Earthcon College" and I have exam after one week. While I am studying I cannot concentrate because of loud music till late at night.

In addition, I cannot take proper sleep at night because of excessive noise pollution, and because of that during day times feel sleepy and it is affecting bad on my health and my work.

Finally, I would like to explain you that do not play loud music till late at night. And if you want to play, the volume should be low. Thus, the voice would not be disturbed me and other neighbours as well.

I am looking forward to your positive respond.

Yours Sincerely,

Amber John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies and sleep, and requesting specific action. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, although the opening salutation 'Dear, Mr. Joy' is slightly awkward. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the necessary information to ensure the recipient understands the situation. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the exams or the duration of the noise to provide more depth, but you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. While these are functional, the transitions are somewhat mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction of the problem to its consequences and finally to the proposed solution. The use of referencing is generally effective, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'excessive noise pollution' and 'concentrate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'it is affecting bad on my health' (should be 'it is having a bad effect on my health') and 'positive respond' (should be 'positive response'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied ways of expressing frustration or requesting action would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'noise, which is coming form your house' (spelling error 'form' instead of 'from'), 'I am study in third year' (should be 'I am studying in my third year'), and 'the voice would not be disturbed me' (should be 'the noise would not disturb me'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of verb tenses.
