IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir
I am writing to complain against my new neighbours. For your information, I live in apartment number 4A and the new neighbours reside in 5A just beside my apartment.
I am a student of Dhaka university and I am studying i
Electrical and Electronics Engineer there. My final exams are nearby as a result I have to study with great attention these days. But I cannot concentrate on my studies because my new neighbours play loud music all night. In addition, they have visitors coming every night. They talk so loud that the noise can be heard for my house.
Being an Engineering student, I have to solve complex mathematics. So, I need to have full focus in my studies but the loud sound and noises break my concentration. Also since the noises come till midnight, I can't sleep peacefully.
I would request you to look into this matter and take necessary action immediately. It will be very helpful if you can send them a warning as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully
Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting specific action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the impact on your studies. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the problem and the proposed solution are distinct and fully elaborated without repeating the same points about noise and concentration. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the problem from the impact and the request for action. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'Also', 'In addition'). The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the transition between the description of the neighbours and the impact on your studies could be more sophisticated. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'concentrate', 'complex mathematics', and 'peacefully'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'complain against' (should be 'complain about') and 'for my house' (should be 'from my house'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the more precise or 'less common' items that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. Focusing on collocations and more formal phrasing would improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am studying i Electrical and Electronics Engineer' (should be 'I am studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering') and 'The noise can be heard for my house'. There are also minor punctuation and capitalization issues. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
