IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear,

Neighbours

Firstly, I would like to welcome you in our flat and kudos to you, but for last two days i do not feel good because i have to focus on my studies but unfortunately you guys play a music very which eventually affects my overall performance.

Its bothering me a lot because loud music would not allow me to concentrate on my studies, whenever i tried to focus on it i loose my vision or concentration. furthermore, i do a part time job as well and the time i get for the studies is night and that you are playing a music too loud.

However, its my humble request to you please slow down a volume little bit so could spend some time on my studies and will perform good in my exam but for i need you co-operation, so i can achieve my goals.

It would be appreciated if you are take some responsibility.

Thank you

your neighbour

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting specific action. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although it fluctuates between formal and informal. To improve, ensure you clearly state the purpose of the letter in the opening paragraph. While your ideas are relevant, they could be developed with more specific detail regarding the timing of the music or the nature of your upcoming exams to make the request more persuasive. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, moving from the introduction to the problem, the impact, and finally the request. You use some cohesive devices like 'furthermore' and 'however' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is not clearly defined, as the text is presented in a single block. Using clear paragraph breaks between the introduction, the body, and the closing would significantly improve the structure. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused, such as starting a sentence with 'However' when the preceding thought did not necessarily contrast with the request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'concentrate', 'performance', and 'responsibility'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'kudos to you' (which is too informal and slightly misused here) and 'loose my vision' (likely meant 'lose my focus'). The phrase 'play a music' is also grammatically incorrect; it should be 'play music'. To reach a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'studies' appearing multiple times in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include missing articles ('in our flat' should be 'in your flat'), incorrect verb forms ('you are take' should be 'you take'), and run-on sentences. The punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization of 'I'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and basic sentence construction will help improve your score.
