IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sharma,

I hope you are doing well. It is wonderful to hear that you have moved next to my home.

I wish you like the area. I want to share one issue that I am a student and I face sleep deprivation due to high volume of music. As, my examination is going on and I need to concentrate on my study. Unfortunately, I am facing severe headache because of loud music.

This behavior is not only affecting my study even it is hard for my grandparents as well. My grandfather is a heart patient and he needs proper sleep. It is very hard for him to get good sleep at night.

I am suggesting you that if you want to listen music just play it in low volume or you can use headphones. Apart from this, you can play music in the morning time. If you have habit to listen music loudly that you should install sound prof glass so that sound will be around you.

I hope as a good family member you will understand our problem which happened because of loud music.

Warm Regards,

Anju Pal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies and health, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'install sound proof glass' is a bit impractical for a neighbourly request. To improve, ensure your suggestions are realistic and focus on the core issue of the noise levels. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the reader understands exactly what you are requesting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'Unfortunately' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'As, my examination is going on'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your thoughts more fluidly. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'sleep deprivation', 'concentrate', and 'appropriate'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'If you have habit to listen music' instead of 'If you have a habit of listening to music' and 'sound prof glass' (soundproof glass). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more natural collocations and ensure that technical terms are spelled correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I wish you like the area' (should be 'I hope you like the area'), 'As, my examination is going on' (incorrect use of 'As'), and 'this behavior is not only affecting my study even it is hard' (should be 'but it is also hard'). These errors occur frequently but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of conjunctions to link clauses more accurately.
