IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbors,

Hope you are settling in well, My name is Ritesh and I live next door. Happy to help you anytime.

I'm having problem with my upcoming exams, which plays a crucial role in my grades cause those are my final exams and I'm not able to prepare for it because of the high volume music you play at night and that affects my concentration while reading.

Can you lower the volume please so that I can easily concentrate on the reading and you can also enjoy the music without any problem also that will be a great help to me as my final exams are in the next upcoming week so you can enjoy music on high volume in the next week as I'll be done with the exams.

I hope we can be a good neighbors and can help each other in their needs.

Thank you,

Ritesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting a specific action. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the third paragraph where the request is restated multiple times. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is developed with more concise and varied language rather than repeating the same information about the exams and the volume.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'and', 'so', and 'because' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by run-on sentences and repetitive phrasing, such as the frequent use of 'and' to connect clauses. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this') to create a more sophisticated progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some relevant phrases like 'settling in well' and 'crucial role'. However, the range is somewhat limited and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'good neighbors' (should be 'good neighbors' or 'a good neighbor') and 'in their needs' (should be 'in our needs' or 'with our needs'). To improve, incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating basic words like 'music' and 'exams' too frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I'm having problem' (missing article 'a'), 'cause those are' (informal 'cause' should be 'because'), and 'as I'll be done with the exams' (slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are overly long and would benefit from being split to improve clarity. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to enhance accuracy.
