IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raman,

Hope so you are doing well,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment regarding late night music. Which disturbs my sleep and study schedule.

Actually, I have my exams in next month therefore I had to spend time on my studies. But unfortunately due to loud noise of music I can’t concentrate properly. Because you are living next to my door due to that I can hear every single sound of noise.

However due to loud noise I can’t even sleep properly which affects my healthy lifestyle and routine. As I sleep late then I wake up late so I missed my gym session and even class as well.

Therefore I have decided to write this request letter. Could you please cooperate with me and according to the rules can you please lower the music sound. Which will be beneficial for me.

Thank you for understanding my situation I will appreciate your support. I will look forward for your positive response.

Your faithfully,

Lovie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem (late-night music), the impact (sleep and study difficulties), and the requested action (lowering the volume). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although it leans slightly informal. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, though the development of the impact on your studies could be more specific to show a higher level of engagement with the task. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Therefore', to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by sentence fragments and repetitive sentence structures. For instance, starting multiple sentences with 'due to' makes the progression feel a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph transitions smoothly into the next would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some functional phrases like 'express my disappointment' and 'beneficial for me'. However, there is a reliance on basic vocabulary, and some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'lower the music sound' instead of 'turn down the volume'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to noise disturbances and academic pressure, and ensure that word choices are consistently natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include punctuation errors (e.g., 'Hope so you are doing well,'), sentence fragments (e.g., 'Which disturbs my sleep...'), and incorrect preposition usage ('next to my door'). Additionally, there are minor errors in verb tense and article usage, such as 'in next month'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
