IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear neighbours,

I hope you are doing well. I just wanted to let you now that I am preparing of certified public accountant examination for my future development and I need to concentrate more into this.

My examination will be held on 30th September and I only have 30 days left to prepare for such a difficult and complicated examination. from morning till late night I am practicing and preparing for spa examination. The main problem I am facing currently is I am hearing sounds of music from your apartment. it is such a loud music that I cannot focus on my studies.

Many times I got distracted from music as my examination requires focus and both time.

I recently contacted to the property management office in our condominium. As per our discussion, they suggested me to connect with you first and convey my message regarding disturbance to you. apart from that, I will also take necessary steps if you continue listen to music at loud volume.

I hope that you understand my problem and will hear from you soon.

yours sincerely,

smith.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: it explains the problem (loud music), describes the impact on studies, and requests action. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint to a neighbour, although it leans slightly towards being overly aggressive in the final paragraph. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be more nuanced. For instance, the mention of the property management office is a good addition to the narrative. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively, providing a clear purpose and a logical flow of information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the problem from the proposed solution, which aids readability. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'apart from that' is used a bit awkwardly. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the examination details and the mention of the property management office. Improving the variety of linking words would help the flow feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their message clearly. There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'preparing of' instead of 'preparing for' and 'connect with you' instead of 'contact you'. The phrase 'both time' is also unclear in context. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'property management office' and 'condominium', the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing the impact of the noise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am hearing sounds of music' (should be 'I hear music'), 'I got distracted' (should be 'I get distracted'), and 'continue listen' (should be 'continue listening'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization at the start of sentences like 'from morning' and 'it is such'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing. A greater focus on verb tense consistency and sentence-level mechanics is needed.
