Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sir,

My name is John. I am a residence of 14-A, Yorkville, Park Street, Canada. I am writing this letter to inform you about the late night playing of music from house will effect on my study preparation for my examinations which will we held on next month.

At first, I am a working student as well as i do my studying also. After completing my job shift by end of the day, i prepare my master studies final semester exams at late night when there is no disturbance. But you play music at very high volume after 11 P.M. Therefore, it creates a huge problem for studying and disturbance in concentration of learning books.

Secondly, Increasing of volume from your sound system and the heavy bass of amplifier leads to cause a brain fog also. Significantly, results in poor sleep quality and decline in exam preparation. Also neighbours around living in different areas are feel conscious for late sleep problems or related activity.

At the end, Rising questions and queries from me and other flatmates and houses of disturbing of loud music, you have to slow down the music level from five to one. you can also use of headphones or earphones of listening music in a better way. Society has also some rule of not playing of music after 10 P.M. Heavy penalty and charges should be fine to them. Government in our area also emphasis for no playing music at high volume, other than if there is any special occasion or event is happening. I hope this information is relevant to you.

I am waiting for your positive response as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear sir' is slightly generic. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of your points is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as the mention of 'brain fog' and the somewhat aggressive tone regarding 'heavy penalty and charges'. To improve, ensure that your suggestions remain polite and focused on resolving the conflict with your neighbours rather than focusing on legal threats.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'At first', 'Secondly', and 'At the end' to signal transitions. However, the use of these markers is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. Furthermore, some sentences lack clear logical flow, such as the transition between discussing your sleep and the general feelings of other neighbours. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message, but there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'residence of' should be 'resident of', and 'learning books' is not standard English. Phrases like 'Rising questions and queries' and 'feel conscious for late sleep problems' are confusing and do not accurately convey your meaning. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise terminology. Avoid over-complicating your sentences with words that do not fit the context, as this can lead to confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'which will we held'), misuse of articles (e.g., 'the heavy bass of amplifier'), and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'Increasing of volume... leads to cause a brain fog'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Proofreading your work for basic errors in tense and word order will significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
