IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear friend,

Today I am writing this letter to bring your attention that you play a music till late night which affects my studies.

Yesterday ,I have been doing my studies for lobger hours suddenly, I listened loud noise of songs from your house which put away my attention. I tried a lot of ways to concentrate on my education unfortunately, I was getting distracted a lot.

I dot not want to complain about it because you are new in our apartment so, you are totally unaware about the circumstances of the apartment.

I would be greatfull to you if you will focus on it.

Kindly reduce the volume of speaker so people do not feel distract while doing their work. If it is possible for you to avoid loud noise during working hours.

Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining the problem, the impact on your studies, and the requested action. However, the response is 138 words, which falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement. This impacts the development of your ideas, as the explanation of the situation remains somewhat brief. To improve, ensure you expand on your points—for example, by describing the specific type of exams you are preparing for or providing more detail on the nature of the noise. While the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, the length penalty is significant.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is organised into short paragraphs, which is appropriate for this task type. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally awkward, such as the transition 'Yesterday, I have been doing my studies... suddenly, I listened'. The connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'as a result') to help the reader follow your argument more smoothly. The opening and closing salutations are also slightly confused, as you address the neighbour as 'Dear friend' but sign off with 'Your faithfully'.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally functional but limited. You rely on basic phrasing, such as 'put away my attention' (which is an incorrect collocation) and 'do not feel distract' (which should be 'distracted'). There is a lack of variety in your word choices, and some expressions are unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to noise complaints and academic study. For instance, instead of 'loud noise of songs', you could use 'excessive volume' or 'disturbing music'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'bring your attention that you play a music' (missing 'to' and incorrect article usage), 'lobger hours' (spelling error), and 'I dot not want' (typo). Your sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. When you do attempt more complex structures, errors in verb tense and word order occur, such as 'I would be greatfull to you if you will focus on it'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
