IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rakesh,

Welcome you and your family in our colony. I'm just writing to you to express my concern about the late-night sound of music coming from your flat that distracting myself to do preparation for my upcoming exams. I am managing time hardly for studying after 8pm, since I am doing a part-time job along with helping husband to complete household chores in the evening regularly so that I have to do study later at night.

As soon as it's 9pm I push myself to sit for two hours to completing syllabus for my examination, the DJ sounds start happening at your place which totally disturb my schedule. I can't concentrate properly on the materials which I thought to finish within the time. Therefore, it takes me more time to make it done, resulting in go late for sleep automatically makes me wake up late in morning as well.

I'll like to request you please inform your family members whoever playing music late at night just play it with less volume so it can't disturb the people in neighbourhood and also that person can relax themselves while playing music.

I hope this letter can't hurt anyone's feelings.

With regards,

Bhgwant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the problem (late-night music), why it is a difficulty (impact on exam preparation and sleep), and provide a specific request for action (lowering the volume). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are well-developed, though the explanation of your daily routine is slightly wordy. To improve, ensure that the focus remains strictly on the impact of the noise rather than excessive detail about household chores, which would make the letter more concise and impactful.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the explanation of the problem, and the request for action. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'As soon as it's 9pm' and 'resulting in go late for sleep'. While the progression of ideas is clear, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your personal circumstances to the request for change.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'distracting', 'concentrate', and 'neighbourhood'. However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors, such as 'Welcome you and your family in our colony' (should be 'to our neighborhood'), 'managing time hardly' (should be 'struggling to find time'), and 'make it done' (should be 'get it done'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'whoever playing music' (should be 'whoever is playing'), 'distracting myself to do preparation' (should be 'distracting me from preparing'), and 'makes me wake up late in morning' (should be 'in the morning'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage will be beneficial.
