IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding a late night music that cause disruption in sleeping and also affecting my on going study.

I am university student and have final exam in a week. So, I have started my preparation prior to me schedule exam date. Unfortunately, I am unable to focus on my study during day time and at night I get distracted because of loud music. Moreover, there's also a disturbance in my sleep, since I can not concentrate on my study appropriately.

For that reasons, I would request to keep the music volume low, especially at night where everyone is sleeping. Furthermore, try to avoid playing songs at late night, because the outside atmosphere is silent and this loud music cause more interruption in other's sleeping pattern.

If you have any questions or concerns you can contact me. Your prompt actions on this matter would be highly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Rishil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem (loud music), the impact (distraction from studies and sleep), and the requested action (keeping volume low). However, the tone is slightly inconsistent. While the task is a formal letter, the opening 'Dear Sir or Madam' is appropriate, but the body paragraphs lack a polite, persuasive tone expected in a formal complaint. The ideas are relevant but somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the impact on sleep and study. To reach a higher band, the student should expand on the specific nature of the request and ensure the tone remains consistently professional throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For that reasons', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, some of these devices are used incorrectly or mechanically. For instance, 'For that reasons' is grammatically incorrect and 'where everyone is sleeping' is a slightly awkward way to transition. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive links and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed point rather than repeating the same concerns.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'disruption' and 'interruption', but there are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'on going study' (ongoing studies) and 'prior to me schedule exam date' (my scheduled exam date). The range is somewhat limited, and the student relies on basic phrasing to describe the situation. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'a late night music that cause' (should be 'late-night music that causes'), 'I am university student' (missing article 'a'), and 'this loud music cause' (subject-verb agreement error). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in articles, verb tense, and subject-verb agreement prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles and verb endings.
