IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing about the issue which I have been facing since you have moved next to my house with family.

The main issue is loud music being played at your house after midnight. This is adversely affecting my schedule, sleep and studies too, as no one can stay focused if loud music is played near them.

I am getting extremely disturbed because I have final examinations of my graduation next month. My goal is to achieve higher scores by which I can get better opportunities in future. Due to this continue noise I cannot concentrate on studies.

I would really appreciate If late night music stopped or volume of the songs reduced which can not only assist me to focus on studies but also my sleep gets better. As a result, I can achieve my desired score in the examination. I cannot wait to receive a positive response from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Mandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music after midnight), describe the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose a specific action (reducing the volume or stopping the music). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. You have maintained a consistent purpose throughout the letter, and the structure is logical and easy to follow. All requirements of the task have been met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The main issue is' and 'As a result', to link your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to make the progression of ideas feel more natural and less mechanical. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'adversely affecting', 'concentrate', and 'desired score'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items to express your frustration or the impact of the noise more vividly. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and the tone remains polite and formal throughout, which is suitable for this type of correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing about the issue which I have been facing...' and 'I would really appreciate If late night music stopped...'. While your meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'due to this continue noise' (should be 'continued' or 'constant') and 'I have final examinations of my graduation' (slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there are occasional missing articles. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your grammar is sufficient to convey your message without difficulty.
