Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Jaivik,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Sam Mistry and I live next to your door. I am writing this to express my concerns about the late night music.
I am studying at the Lambton college and my exams are coming in the next week. I usually study at night because I have part-time job during day. However, for last couple of days, my studies have been affecting by your late night music and it is extremely hard for me to focus. Your loud late night music is not only affecting my studies but also my sleep. I have not been able to sleep properly due to loud music.
Therefore, I am making a request to take some actions against it. Either you can play slow music or you can change your time and play it in the daytime.
I believe, you have understood my problems.
Yours sincerely,
Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained the problem (late-night music), described the impact on your studies and sleep, and proposed specific actions for the neighbour to take. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the music or the intensity of your exam preparation to provide more depth to your ideas, but you have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'not only... but also' to link your ideas. While the flow is clear, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, as some of your current sentence structures feel slightly repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'express my concerns', 'focus', and 'properly'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'studying at the Lambton college' (should be 'at Lambton College') and 'my studies have been affecting by' (should be 'affected by'). To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any misunderstanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I live next to your door' (should be 'next door to you'), 'have part-time job' (should be 'a part-time job'), and 'during day' (should be 'during the day'). Additionally, 'I believe, you have understood my problems' is slightly awkward; a more natural phrasing would be 'I hope you understand my situation.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. Increasing your control over articles and prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
