Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Aadit,
I hope that you are doing well. My concern to write this letter is that, I am a studet of Masters in Univesity of Toronto and my final exams is going to conduct by the university in end of this month. But, I am unable to focus on my studies because you and your housemates plays a loud music every night which is affecting my studies on serious basis.
Additionally, all day I am at univesity and I come home in the evening. So, the only time left for me to prepare for the final paper in night time. Also, I have to wake eary morning for my morning lectures which quite difficult for me nowadays because of this loud music. Moreover, I just want you to play music on low volume so, it doesn't affect my studies.
I hope you will understand the seriousness of this issue and looking forward to see actions from your end.
Thank you,
Rahul.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: it identifies the problem (loud music), explains the impact on studies and sleep, and suggests a solution (lowering the volume). The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the music is a problem could be more detailed to fully convey the urgency of the situation. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into three paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the complaint. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'So', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive structures to connect the problem to the proposed solution more fluidly. Overall, the structure is sufficient for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'studet' instead of 'student', 'Univesity' instead of 'University', and 'eary' instead of 'early'. These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more careful proofreading. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited; for example, 'on serious basis' is an unnatural collocation. Using more precise phrases would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('my final exams is going to conduct' should be 'are going to be conducted') and article usage ('in end of this month' should be 'at the end of this month'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The writer should focus on verb tenses and passive voice construction to improve accuracy.
