Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. here i would like to request about that i live in a house no. 285 . new neighbours were arrived a week ago and next door to where i live.

I am working at clinic, also doing study. I have exams for masters. i dont have enough time to do study. because i came at home around 4 pm after that i have to prepare for meal.

when i am returning to home. my neighbours listen loud music, conflict with each other.

Major problem is that they speak with each other so loudly, it was so disturbing for me. because i am tired also. i want rest and peace. at late night they play music and dance. they can listen music but too low. its not that you should disturb your neighbours. I already told them so many times but they dont listen. please ask them politely or take action against them.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Emily.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting specific action. However, the tone is inconsistent for a formal letter. You addressed the letter to 'Manager' rather than the landlord or the neighbours themselves, which is slightly confusing given the context. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. For instance, the description of the noise could be more specific to help the reader understand the severity of the situation. To improve, ensure your opening and closing salutations match the recipient and provide more cohesive development of your points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The letter is organized into short, somewhat disjointed paragraphs. There is a lack of logical flow between sentences, and the use of cohesive devices is very limited. For example, the transition between your work life and the noise complaint is abrupt. You rely on simple sentence structures rather than linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'however') to connect your ideas. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related ideas together. To improve, focus on using transition signals to guide the reader through your argument and ensure each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is functional but basic, and there are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices. For example, 'new neighbours were arrived' should be 'new neighbours arrived', and 'conflict with each other' is not the most natural way to describe noisy neighbours. You also use 'do study' instead of 'study' or 'prepare for my exams'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is a lack of precision. To improve, try to learn collocations related to noise complaints and formal letter writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb tense ('were arrived'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence fragments. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many sentences starting with lowercase letters or lacking proper capitalization. You rely almost exclusively on simple sentences, with very few attempts at complex structures. While the errors do not completely prevent communication, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, correct verb tenses, and consistent use of capitalization and punctuation.
