- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Neighbour,
I am writing to ask if you could reduce the volume of the music you play late at night. I understand that you have recently moved in and may be settling into your new home, but the loud music has become a problem for me.
I have examination coming up soon, so I need to spend a lot of time studying. unfortunately, the music continues late into the night and make it difficult for me to concentrate. It also effects my sleep, which leaves me tired the next day.
I would really appreciate it if you could keep the music at a lower volume, especially after 10p.m. If you are having guests or a special occasion, please let me know in advance so i can make other arrangements.
I Hope you understand my situation and can help me by keeping the noise down at night.
your sincerely, joban

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the problem regarding the loud music, detailed how it impacts your studies and sleep, and proposed a reasonable solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance throughout. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'but', 'so', and 'if' effectively to link your ideas. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in light of this') to improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs, making the text feel more cohesive and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'settling into your new home' and 'make other arrangements' are natural and appropriate. However, there are some minor errors in word choice, such as using 'effects' instead of the verb 'affects'. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I have examination coming up' (missing an article: 'an examination'), 'make it difficult' (subject-verb agreement: 'makes'), and some punctuation/capitalization errors like '10p.m.' and 'i'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and basic article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
