New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sayal,

I am writing you this letter to inform that I am studying in Bachelor of commerce in MS University and I have exams after 10 days.As I know that you are new neighbours in our society that's why you do not aware about rules and regulations of our society where we live. You should not play music till late night because it is against the rules of society. Not only me but all my family members also face problems due to high volume of music.l observed that last night you played music very fast with high volume.

I can not concentrate on studies. The sound of music is literally irritates me and it's hurting my ears too.I am very worried about that because as I mentioned earlier I have exams after few days.If I can not focus on my study,it will affect on my result.Even I can not get calm sleep.

So,I request you should not play music with high volume. If still you play music till late night,I will report your complaint to our society chairman.I hope you will understand my problem very well.

I am agarly waiting for you prompt action.

Yours sincerely,

Tina shah.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task: explaining the problem, describing the impact on studies and sleep, and requesting specific action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, though it occasionally veers into being overly aggressive (e.g., threatening to report the neighbour to the chairman immediately). The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the requirements well. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on maintaining a more polite, diplomatic tone while still being firm, as this is more typical for a formal letter to a neighbour.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences often relies on simple structures. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to a lack of varied linking words. Improving the use of cohesive devices such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in light of this' would enhance the flow and help the response achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their message clearly. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'played music very fast' (likely meaning 'loudly') and 'I am agarly waiting' (spelling error for 'eagerly'). While the range is sufficient to cover the topic, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. The student relies on common, everyday language. Incorporating more precise collocations related to noise complaints or academic pressure would demonstrate a stronger command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you this letter to inform that I am studying' (missing object/preposition), 'you do not aware' (missing verb 'are'), and 'it will affect on my result' (incorrect preposition). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas and periods. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would be beneficial.
