IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbour,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to make request regarding keeping down the voice of your sound system during late nights.

As I am a student of nursing programme, I must have to do study untill late nights as well as my classes are usually running in early morning. However, I cannot perform my task with concentration due to louder voice of your music. In addition to that, sometimes, I have to miss my lessons as not getting enough sleep at night, and owning to this, my attentadence is declining dramatically in my current semester.

Nevertheless I would be incredibly greatful if you could kindly lower down volume which you are listening or if appropriate, please use headphones so that I can focus on my studies.

Thank you for your understanding. This small adjustment will foster my concentration level towards getting higher score in my examination.

Kind regards,

Krisha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly explain the problem (loud music), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provide a specific request for action (lowering the volume or using headphones). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are fully consistent with the formal tone required for this type of correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the consequences and finally the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that' and 'Nevertheless' to link your ideas. However, the use of 'Nevertheless' is slightly misused in this context, as it usually introduces a contrast, whereas your final paragraph is a continuation of your request. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'concentration level', 'dramatically', and 'foster'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'keeping down the voice of your sound system' (should be 'volume') and 'attentadence' (spelling error: 'attendance'). Additionally, 'greatful' is misspelled. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a focus on natural collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise terms for describing noise disturbances would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I must have to do study' (redundant 'have to' and 'do'), 'classes are usually running' (should be 'run'), and 'lower down volume which you are listening' (missing 'the' and 'to'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will help you move into a higher band.
