IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma

I am writing to inform you that the late night loud music at your home is becoming a reason for me to not to focus on my studies.

My study room and may be your living room are sharing same wall which makes it easy for the noise to come in. Also, the high volume of the songs distracts me from my task.

My exams are going to start next week and almost for two weeks. I work weekdays from 9 am till 5 pm and i start doing my study after reaching home but unable to focus because of the music being played at your place.

I want to request you if you could cooporate with my situtaion and avoid playing music after 5pm if possible. After my exams are done i will inform you as soon as possible.

I hope you will understand my situation.

I really appreciate your kind action towards this.

Yours faithfully,

Kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies, and requesting specific action. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the request to 'avoid playing music after 5pm' is slightly unrealistic given that you mentioned you start studying after 5pm, which might be perceived as an unreasonable demand. To improve, ensure your proposed solutions are balanced and practical. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the response effectively communicates the situation to the recipient.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the personal impact and the request. While the flow is generally good, some transitions are a bit mechanical, such as 'Also, the high volume...' and 'I want to request you...'. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices, such as 'consequently' or 'furthermore', would improve the flow. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the shared wall and the noise could be more smoothly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'inform', 'distracts', and 'cooperate'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'cooporate' (cooperate), 'situtaion' (situation), and 'may be' (maybe). Additionally, the phrase 'reason for me to not to focus' is slightly awkward and could be phrased more naturally. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I start doing my study' (should be 'I start studying'), 'almost for two weeks' (should be 'for almost two weeks'), and 'after my exams are done' (should be 'after my exams are over'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with capitalization (e.g., 'i start'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve accuracy.
