- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Shah,
I am writing this letter to make a request to you. I have my final exams starting from next week. I am studying for that until late night, but your son plays a loud music on the loop during the night everyday.
I am facing a few difficulties because of it for example, I am not be able to concentrate while studying ,and it affects my parents sleep too. Also, it affects my sleep cycle which makes even more difficult for me to study hard during the day as well.
I would like to make you one request that if you can tell him to play the music at lower volume or try to avoid it during the night. In addition, if he still wants to play just let him know that he should close the doors and the windows while playing so it would not disturb to someone else privacy.
I hope you will understand my situation and will try to solve it as soon as possible.
Regards,
Vipal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the problem (loud music at night), explain the impact on your studies and sleep, and propose reasonable solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more conventional for a formal letter, such as using 'Dear Mr. Shah' followed by a formal sign-off like 'Yours sincerely' instead of 'Regards'. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also', 'In addition', and 'I hope', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'Also', you could integrate those points into the previous paragraph using relative clauses or more sophisticated conjunctions. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your message. Phrases like 'concentrate while studying' and 'sleep cycle' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'on the loop' (should be 'on a loop') and 'disturb to someone else privacy' (should be 'disturb someone else's privacy'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise vocabulary would enhance the professional tone of your letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am not be able to' (should be 'I am not able to'), 'a loud music' (should be 'loud music'), and 'it affects my parents sleep' (should be 'parents' sleep'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and possessive apostrophes. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
