IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Hi Mr singh,

Hope you are doing great; I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the loud music you always plays at night after 10 pm.

The foremost reason for this concern is that from next week I have my final graduation examination of heath care aide and It is really very tricky exam. Apart from this, I have my college and work in the day light. Thus, only time for studying effectively and efficiently is night time when I complete my whole household work.

I will be very grateful if you stop playing music at night otherwise I have to raise concern to the property manager of this place and prior to this they also gave a 200 doThe other reason is that the bedroom is just beside your living room where you placed your speakers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: explaining the problem, the impact on your studies, and the requested action. However, the letter is under the 150-word minimum, which significantly impacts the score. The development of ideas is somewhat disjointed, particularly the final sentence which appears to be a fragmented thought about a property manager's fine. To improve, ensure you fully develop each point with coherent sentences and meet the length requirement to avoid a penalty. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, though the structure needs more cohesion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter lacks a clear paragraph structure. While there is a logical progression from the problem to the impact and then the solution, the transition between ideas is abrupt. The final sentence is disconnected from the rest of the paragraph, making the overall flow confusing. You should use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the body (problem and impact), and the conclusion (requested action). Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is limited; incorporating linking words like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'therefore' would help improve the logical flow between your sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You use basic phrases like 'really very tricky' and 'do the other reason'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'day light' instead of 'daytime' and 'raise concern' instead of 'file a complaint'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Using more sophisticated vocabulary related to the context, such as 'disturbing', 'academic performance', or 'consideration', would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of the text. For example, 'you always plays' should be 'you always play', and 'I have my final graduation examination of heath care aide' lacks proper articles and capitalization. The sentence 'otherwise I have to raise concern' would be better expressed using a conditional structure, such as 'otherwise I would be forced to...'. While you attempt some complex sentences, they are often marred by errors in subject-verb agreement and punctuation. Focusing on basic sentence accuracy and consistent verb tense usage will help improve your score.
