- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to stop playing music at late night.
To begin with, I have exam next month. Regarding to this, I used to study till mid night. I am really getting disturb by your late night loud music. However, I tried to close all the windows and doors of my house, hence the music is still audible.
Furthermore, I need to go to work during a daytime so I do not get time to read in a day. So I always try to study at night. In contrast, I am extremely getting disturb while studying. As a result, I can not concentrate in topics. Furthermore, I also have to wake up early in the morning for my work, due to the loud music I can not get enough and hygiene sleep.
Thus, I request you to play music at the minimum sound. I can understand your entertainment but you should also try to understand my situation. In addition, we all should respect each other's privacy.
It would be a pleasure if you consider my request in a positive way and apply the proper action.
Yours faithfully,
Khushi Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the problem, describing the impact on your studies and sleep, and requesting specific action. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly impersonal for a neighbour; 'Dear Neighbour' would have been more suitable. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the impact on your studies could be more concise to avoid repetition. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements of the task are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'In contrast' when describing your inability to concentrate, which does not logically contrast with the previous sentence. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used in the correct context would enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'audible', 'concentrate', and 'privacy' are used correctly. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'getting disturb' (should be 'disturbed'), 'hygiene sleep' (which is not a standard collocation; 'restful' or 'uninterrupted' sleep would be better), and 'apply the proper action' (which sounds unnatural; 'take appropriate action' is better). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include 'I have exam' (missing article 'an'), 'Regarding to this' (incorrect preposition; 'Regarding this' or 'In relation to this' is better), and 'during a daytime' (incorrect article). There are also issues with verb forms, such as 'I am extremely getting disturb' instead of 'I am becoming extremely disturbed'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
