IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to complain about the late night loud music being played at your house which is affecting my studies.

First of all, as we are well aware with the policies of our society, it is strictly prohibited to play music after 9 pm. Not only you are playing music till midnight but also it is very loud and disturbing. The walls of our apartments are made of wood and dry wall so all these sounds can easily penetrate through them.

I have my board exam this upcoming week and it is very hard for me to concentrate on my studies while my neighbours are blasting music at full volume. I have enrolled in computer engineering and technician which is one of the most demanding and challenging courses available in the campus and i could not afford to fail in this course as it would have a direct affect on my future.

I am requesting you to stop playing music during late at night or you can keep volume low so other would not get bothered with this.

I hope you understand the seriousness of this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Smith.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies (upcoming board exams), and the desired action (stop playing music or lower the volume). The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the 'board exam' or the 'society policies' to further develop your ideas, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Not only... but also', and 'I hope you understand'. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'strictly prohibited', 'penetrate', and 'demanding'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'enrolled in computer engineering and technician' (which is slightly awkward) and 'direct affect' (should be 'effect'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring the correct usage of nouns versus verbs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Not only... but also' construction. There are some grammatical errors, including 'we are well aware with' (should be 'of'), 'direct affect' (should be 'effect'), and 'other would not get bothered' (should be 'others would not be bothered'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence structure is varied enough to maintain the reader's interest. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
