IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to show my concern about the late night music.
I know everyone has a different way of enjoyment, I think you like to play music as a fun. However, loud noise creates irritation for me and it is really difficult for me to concentrate on my regular tasks as I am a full-time medical student.
The main concern is that my final examinations are coming soon, I am not able to achieve my proper sleep due to the loud music, which is directly effecting my sleep schedule and I am not able to pay attention to my studies during day time.
I don't want to be a rude neighbour as we are community, if you could slow down your music after 10PM, that will be great for me.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to a prompt replay.
Best regards,
Simranjeet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: it identifies the problem (late-night music), explains the impact (difficulty concentrating on medical studies and lack of sleep), and proposes a clear solution (lowering the volume after 10 PM). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the desired outcome. The response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'The main concern is that', and 'if you could' are used to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the identification of the problem to its consequences and finally to the proposed solution. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'show my concern' (better: 'express my concern') and 'as we are community' (better: 'as we are part of the same community'). The phrase 'play music as a fun' is slightly unnatural. However, the student uses relevant vocabulary like 'concentrate', 'full-time medical student', and 'prompt', which demonstrates a reasonable range. The errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the comma splice in 'my final examinations are coming soon, I am not able to' and the misuse of 'effecting' instead of 'affecting'. Additionally, 'replay' is a spelling error for 'reply'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the sentence structures are generally functional. The control of grammar is sufficient for the task, though more complex structures could be used with greater accuracy.
