IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Wilson,

First of all, Congratulations! for your new home. I am Mr. Patel, your neighbour to the left.

I am writing this letter to complain about the noise of music late at night which is adversely affecting my studies.

To begin with, I am a student of Physcology and I have my examinations starting next week for which I would prefer to have a quiet environment. There is a very loud music being played late at night at your place which is disturbing my sleep and my routine. Due to lack of sleep, I wake up tired and I am unable to focus on my exam preparation. As this is, my final year this is a very crucial exam for me.

Nonetheless, the music irritates my dogs and they start an endless barking. I would like you to slow down the volume after 9 pm on weekdays and if possible until next month please try to avoid playing songs during weekends as your place is the loudest especially on Sundays.

I hope you understand my concern and we can resolve it calmly and immediately.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the problem (loud music at night), the impact on your studies and sleep, and provided a specific request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the connection between the noise, your lack of sleep, and your upcoming examinations. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details are fully integrated; for instance, the mention of the dogs is a relevant supporting detail that adds depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a polite closing. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with' and 'Nonetheless' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. However, the cohesion could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is consistently smooth. For example, the transition between the impact on your studies and the impact on your dogs could be slightly more fluid to enhance the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'adversely affecting' and 'crucial exam' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'Physcology' (Psychology), and some slightly unnatural collocations like 'slow down the volume' (usually 'turn down the volume'). While these errors do not impede communication, addressing them would improve the precision of your writing. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words would help elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'There is a very loud music' (should be 'There is very loud music' or 'There is some very loud music') and 'As this is, my final year' (the comma is unnecessary). Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured. To improve, focus on article usage and punctuation consistency to ensure your writing is polished.
