IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jaivik,

I hope this letter finds you well.

My name is Sam Mistry and I am your neighbor. I hope that you must be loving this place. However, the reason I am writing this is to express my concern over late night music. Usually, I love to listen the music, but my examinations are coming in the next few weeks. I am studying at the University of Waterloo and I have my final exams which are essential for my future.

I am facing some difficulties in my studies and I am not able to sleep properly due to the music. Although I have tried ear plugs to avoid the music, it was too loud to sleep.

Therefore, I would like you to take some action against it. Otherwise, I have to complain about it. Either you can change the time of music or lower the volume.

I hope that you would understand my situation.

Yours truly,

Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: it identifies the problem (late-night music), explains the impact (difficulty studying and sleeping for upcoming exams), and proposes specific actions (changing the time or lowering the volume). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, although the threat to 'complain' is slightly aggressive for a first interaction. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Although', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the introduction and the body could be more fluid. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their concerns clearly. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'listen the music' (should be 'listen to music') and 'take some action against it' (which sounds slightly confrontational). While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the score to a higher band. The language is functional and appropriate for a semi-formal letter, but could benefit from more varied expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I hope that you must be loving this place' (which is awkward phrasing) and 'Otherwise, I have to complain' (which should be 'Otherwise, I will have to complain'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the errors do not impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient to demonstrate a reasonable level of grammatical competence.
