New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Hi Hasan,

I hope you are doing well. I really want to let you know that your over night music playing is causing problem for me.

I am your neighbour from your next room 2105. I have notic that you are playing music every day till midnight and this is causing problem in my study and sleep.

As my appertment is next to yours so I am getting the hight amount of noice from your room. For this higher volume, I am really haveing problem in my study.I have examinations soon.

It would be really helpfull if you can lower the sound and avoid overnight music. I hope you will understand my problem.

I will wait far a positive responce from you.

Sincerely,

Abdullahel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: it explains the problem, describes the impact on studies and sleep, and requests a specific action. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, but the lack of length means the points are not fully extended or supported. To improve, you should expand on the specific nature of the music or provide more detail about your upcoming examinations to better justify your request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body, and closing. Paragraphing is present, though the paragraphs are quite short due to the limited word count. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'As my appertment is next to yours' and 'For this higher volume', but they are somewhat repetitive and basic. The flow of ideas is generally clear, but the overall progression is hindered by the brevity of the text. Using a wider variety of linking words would help improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'notic' (noticed), 'appertment' (apartment), 'noice' (noise), 'haveing' (having), 'helpfull' (helpful), and 'responce' (response). These errors are frequent and occasionally distracting. The range of vocabulary is limited to basic, everyday language. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on accurate spelling and attempt to use more precise collocations, such as 'disturbing my concentration' instead of 'causing problem in my study'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'your over night music playing is causing problem' (missing article/pluralization), 'I am really haveing problem' (incorrect verb form), and 'I will wait far a positive responce' (preposition/spelling error). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over basic grammar. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
