IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Dear Neighbour,

I am writing this email to discuss some problem.

Firstly, we should consider the importance of my neighbour have recently moved into house next door to where I live, which will contribute to the overall efficiency and well-being of the operation.

Also, if we take into account the likelihood of I have examinations soon, and I study late night, but my neighbours play music late at night which is affecting my studies and sleep, it is expected to have a three fold effect for several reasons, including explaining what the problem is, why it is causing my diffculties, and what action I would like them to take.

Furthermore, causing my difficulties should not be neglected as they can increase the chances of success, quality of a life, effectiveness, and a positive environment.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Alexa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count of 150 words, coming in at 144 words. Furthermore, the content struggles significantly to address the task prompt naturally. While the writer attempts to mention the problem of late-night music, the integration of prompt requirements feels forced and repetitive, heavily relying on copy-pasted prompt instructions rather than original communicative development. Bullet points from the prompt (explaining the problem, why it causes difficulties, and desired action) are mentioned as meta-commentary rather than properly role-played in an email to a neighbour. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a lower band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The letter follows a standard email format with a salutation and sign-off, and uses basic cohesive markers like 'Firstly', 'Also', and 'Furthermore'. However, the logical progression is severely disrupted by confusing sentence structures and repetitive phrases. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal coherence. For example, sentences such as 'Furthermore, causing my difficulties should not be neglected' make little sense in context, creating a disjointed and confusing reading experience overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The lexical resource is very basic and heavily reliant on vocabulary directly lifted from the task instructions. Phrases such as 'explaining what the problem is', 'why it is causing my difficulties', and 'what action I would like them to take' are awkwardly embedded into sentences rather than expressed using natural functional language. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate collocations throughout the text, such as 'likelihood of I have examinations soon' and 'three fold effect'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently result in severe errors. There are numerous grammatical infractions, including tense errors and incorrect clause structures, such as 'neighbour have recently moved into house' and 'the likelihood of I have examinations soon'. Basic punctuation is present, but control over syntax is poor, causing frequent difficulty for the reader and impeding clear communication.
