- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter in regards to complain about the music that you play at night. Recently, new residents have moved in next to my house. I have exams nearby. However, my new neighbours play music loudly at night, which creates a disturbance to my study and sleep.
I am studying in college. I have a final examination in two weeks. Thus, I prepare for the exam late at night or in the early morning, as I have college in the afternoon. However, your music is too loud, and you play it late at night, which makes it impossible to study or to sleep properly.
There are a few difficulties that I suffer from your loud music are neither study or sleep properly. While you play music loudly at night. I am not able to concentrate on my studies. Besides that, I plan to go to bed early at night. If so, I can wake up early in the morning and study. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so because of a prior problem.
I kindly want to request you to play the music less loudly so I can study or sleep better. I do not want to make a complaint to the society management unless you force me to do so.
Looking forward to better cooperation.
Yours faithfully,
Abhay Ladani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. The problem is clearly explained through statements like 'my new neighbours play music loudly at night', the difficulties are well-elaborated as the writer mentions having upcoming final examinations and being unable to sleep or concentrate, and the desired action is explicitly requested in the fourth paragraph ('play the music less loudly'). However, there is a major structural and tone issue at the beginning of the letter: the writer addresses the recipient as 'Dear Sir' and mixes second-person ('you') and third-person perspectives when referring to the neighbours ('Recently, new residents have moved in next to my house... However, my new neighbours play music loudly... However, your music is too loud'). This confusion impacts the overall communicative quality and consistency of the letter. Despite this stylistic flaw, all content requirements are covered adequately, placing it at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a recognizable logical progression, starting with an introduction of the issue, followed by personal circumstances, the specific difficulties faced, and finally the requested action and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate different ideas, which helps readability. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'If so, I can wake up early' is awkward, and the sentence 'There are a few difficulties that I suffer from your loud music are neither study or sleep properly' is grammatically broken and disrupts logical flow. Referencing is also inconsistent, particularly with pronouns shifting awkwardly between 'neighbours' and 'you'. Overall, the arrangement is coherent overall, but the mechanical errors in cohesion limit the score to Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts relating to studies, exams, and noise disturbances. Phrases like 'final examination', 'concentrate on my studies', and 'society management' are appropriate. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'in regards to complain' instead of 'to complain' or 'regarding', and 'exams nearby' instead of 'upcoming exams'. Furthermore, repetitive use of basic vocabulary like 'study', 'music', and 'night' restricts the lexical range. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band, aligning the response firmly with Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although my new neighbours play music loudly at night, which creates a disturbance...' and 'I do not want to make a complaint to the society management unless you force me to do so.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text. For example, 'There are a few difficulties that I suffer from your loud music are neither study or sleep properly' contains severe structural breakdown. Other issues include 'I have exams nearby' and missing articles or preposition slips. While communication is rarely impeded entirely, the frequency of grammatical and punctuation errors means the text falls short of Band 6.0 in terms of overall accuracy, resulting in a Band 5.5.
